As a lifelong Pitt fan I have seen some pretty good QB’s come thru. Here’s my list of Pitt’s top five quarterbacks of all time, based on their contributions to the program, accolades, and impact.
1. Dan Marino (1979–1982)
• Achievements: Marino is arguably the greatest quarterback in Pitt history. During his time at Pitt, Marino threw for 8,597 yards and 79 touchdowns, setting numerous school records. He led Pitt to a Sugar Bowl victory in the 1981 season and finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting that same year.
• Legacy: Marino went on to have a Hall of Fame NFL career with the Miami Dolphins and is considered one of the greatest quarterbacks in football history.
2. Matt Cavanaugh (1974–1977)
• Achievements: Cavanaugh led Pitt to an undefeated 12-0 season in 1976, culminating in a national championship with a Sugar Bowl victory over Georgia. He earned Sugar Bowl MVP honors after an exceptional performance.
• Legacy: Cavanaugh became a key figure in Pitt’s storied history, known for his leadership and clutch play. He later had a lengthy career as an NFL player and coach.
3. Rod Rutherford (2000–2003)
• Achievements: Rutherford was a dynamic quarterback who passed for 6,724 yards and 60 touchdowns during his career. He also contributed as a runner, making him one of Pitt’s most versatile quarterbacks.
• Legacy: His senior year in 2003, where he threw for over 3,000 yards and 37 touchdowns, was one of the best statistical seasons in Pitt history.
4. Kenny Pickett (2017–2021)
• Achievements: Pickett rewrote the Pitt record books, finishing his career as the all-time leader in passing yards (12,303) and passing touchdowns (81). In 2021, he led Pitt to an ACC Championship and was a Heisman Trophy finalist.
• Legacy: Pickett is considered a program-changing player, helping elevate Pitt to national prominence during his tenure.
5. Alex Van Pelt (1989–1992)
• Achievements: Van Pelt was a prolific passer who held Pitt’s career passing record for years before being surpassed. He threw for over 11,000 yards during his career, making him one of the most productive quarterbacks in school history.
• Legacy: Van Pelt is remembered for his consistent play and leadership during his four years as a starter.
