NFL fans, it’s that time of year again. We are in the month of February and we all know what that means, NFL COMBINE. The NFL combine is an event that invites about 330 collegiate football players to help their draft status. It is a 4 day event that gets teams/players and fans excited. We see players run the 40, do the bench press as well as other test that displays their athletic ability. Coaches and GM’s watch these guys perform these various physical test as well get them to take medical exams by their individual team drs. Medical exams are done because teams want to know everything about a player they may end up drafting. They interview multiple players and ask all kinds of questions. Questions such as, What are your career nfl goals or something like, what has football taught you that help you in your everyday life. These are run of the mill questions asked during a job interview, these questions also get weird. Players have had teams ask, do you find your own mother attractive or at what age did you lose your virginity? Yea, like you I don’t get the relevance of those bizarre questions. Regardless 99.99% of NFL fans love the combine.
I am that .001 % guy, I don’t care for the combine nor do I see the importance of it. Here’s why, running the 40 shows your speed on a straight line without pads or opposing players in your way. The bench press allows participants show how strong they are, but just being extremely strong or fast doesn’t mean a whole lot on the field. If that were the case we’d have Olympics sprinters playing wide receivers and champion weight lifting strongmen as well as sumo wrestlers be offensive & defensive linemen. The quarterback have to make throws, there are no defenders, there are no D linemen chasing them, the qb’s aren’t wearing pads. EVERY QB SHOULD LOOK GOOD THROWING IN THOSE CONDITIONS. My biggest issue for hating the combine are those reasons. Damn how fast you are in a straight line, to hell with how many times you bench press 225 pounds. Each team has seasons of actual game tape to watch. Did you make great passes during the games, did you block the defensive tackle and open holes for you running backs, did you beat the offensive lineman and sack the quarterback or plug the hole to make a tackle. NOBODY ACTUALLY PLAYS FOOTBALL DURING THE 4 DAY COMBINE. Maybe that’s why we see so many high draft picks that end up as bust, because GM’s and coaches put a ton into a guys combine numbers rather than the tape of him playing against actual opponents. I realize I’m a rarity and not many see or understand my point of view on the NFL combine. I guess that’s the beauty of America, WE ALL GET TO EXPRESS OUR OWN IDEAS AND OPINIONS!!
